Monday March 27, Epilepsy and what might be happening at the genetic level; Gene chips and a talk with Jeff Loeb
Jeff Loeb will be visiting with us to help us walk through the papers.
Email the best of your questions to Dr. Loeb here.

Loeb lab web site is at: http://www.genetics.wayne.edu/jloeb/
This week we're going to talk about broad scans of gene expression.  The subject is epilepsy, and the goal is for each of us to read the following papers and then think through how we would design a chip experiment to get some traction on what is happening in epileptic brains.  On thursday, Jeff Loeb will be visiting (see links on thursday's page) to talk to us about how his group is wrestling with the problem.

Papers we will read before thursday are:
Speed Array Design Nature 2002.pdf
Cascino review on epilepsy surgery 2004.pdf
Yao microarray methods bmc 2004.pdf
Here are some papers that are interesting background reading if you are so inclined...

Papers on techniques for looking at differentially expressed genes.  Methods that were particularly popular BEFORE the genome went on line:
A very cool technique known as differential display, or sometimes Pardee gels after the inventor.
Subtractive libraries.
Here is a really nice review of all the ways you can compare RNA populations.
A nice review on differential display
